OWU Data Lab
Founder’s Note
I founded the OWU Data Lab in July 2025 as my faculty startup when I joined Ohio Wesleyan University as an Assistant Professor. The Lab grew from a desire to create a shared, interdisciplinary space where data could be used not only as a technical tool, but as a means for inquiry, collaboration, and responsible decision-making across academic, community, and organizational contexts.
Mission
The mission of the OWU Data Lab is to advance data-driven learning, research, and engagement by bringing together students, faculty, and external partners to explore data responsibly, develop analytical and machine learning solutions, and address real-world challenges.
Vision
The OWU Data Lab envisions a university-centered hub where data becomes a common language across disciplines. Rooted in the liberal arts tradition, the Lab integrates technical rigor with critical thinking, ethical awareness, and social responsibility, preparing students and collaborators to navigate and lead in a data-rich world.
What We Do
Explore and Analyze Data
The Data Lab provides access to datasets, analytical tools, and computational resources that support hands-on learning and applied research. Participants work with real-world data to generate insight, test hypotheses, and communicate findings effectively.
Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The Lab brings together perspectives from across departments and programs, encouraging collaborations that combine domain expertise with data science methods. These partnerships support innovative scholarship and integrative learning experiences.
Develop Data-Driven and Machine Learning Solutions
Through faculty-led and student-supported projects, the Lab designs statistical models, machine learning approaches, and data-informed frameworks that help partners better understand complex systems and make informed decisions.
Faculty Engagement
The OWU Data Lab supports faculty by serving as a collaborative space for research development, course integration, and mentorship. Faculty are invited to:
Incorporate data-driven projects into their courses
Collaborate on interdisciplinary research initiatives
Mentor students in applied and scholarly data work
Explore ethical and methodological questions related to data and AI
Student Opportunities
Students working with the OWU Data Lab gain experiential learning opportunities that complement their academic programs. Opportunities may include:
Collaborative research projects
Paid or mentored positions within the Lab
Support for coursework involving data analysis or modeling
Exposure to applied projects with community and organizational partners
These experiences are designed to build analytical skills, confidence, and professional readiness.
Partnerships and External Engagement
As an academic center, the OWU Data Lab partners with community organizations, nonprofits, government agencies, and industry collaborators through mission-aligned, educationally grounded engagements. Rather than operating as a consultancy, the Lab emphasizes collaboration, learning, and shared impact.
Partner organizations may work with the Lab to:
Gain insight from existing data through exploratory analysis and visualization
Co-develop analytical or machine learning models
Inform strategy, planning, evaluation, or policy through data-informed approaches
Ethical and Responsible Data Science
Ethical practice is central to the OWU Data Lab’s work. The Lab is committed to responsible data collection, transparent analysis, privacy protection, and fairness in modeling and interpretation. Participants are encouraged to critically examine the social, institutional, and ethical implications of data-driven and AI-based systems, ensuring that technical innovation serves the public good.
